遺伝子的に不安定なStreptomyces lividans 1326のchloramphenicol resistance geneがクローニングされ、特徴づけされた。この遺伝子、そして隣接するDNA領域は自発的に失われたり、変異体の中で増幅したりする。chloramphenicolはacetyltransferaseや他の酵素によって修飾されず(chloramphenicolはacetylationによって不活化されるので今は不活化されないことを示す)、しかも抵抗株のリボソームはchloramphenicolに対して感受性がある。resistance geneは12TMSsのalpha-helicesを持つと推測される疎水性タンパクをコードし、tetracycline efflux membrane proteinに似ている。
