mithramycinに抵抗性を与えるcosmid clone (cosAR3)からmtmGI and mtmGII を同定。
両遺伝子の推定産物は、抗生物質生合成でのglycosyl transferに関与するglycosyltransferasesを含むglycosyltransferases and glucuronosyltransferasesと類似性を示した。

両遺伝子の不活化mutantsはmithramycin非産生で、disaccharide部分を持たない化合物を蓄積。
よって、mtmGI and mtmGII によってコードされるglycosyltransferasesはmithramycin生合成の際にdisaccharideを形成、移動することを担うと提唱される。

また、蓄積した新規代謝産物の構造から、aglyconeの最終成形(4環→3環)の前にtrisaccharide glycosyl transfer stepsが含まれると示唆された。
