L-cysteine desulfurase/L-selenocysteine lyase。Cys=>SH+Ala/Se-Cys=>Se+Ala。活性 Se-Cys>Cys(in vitro)。
active site(364Cys)は基質Cysに対する活性に必須(mutantは基質Se-Cys活性減少するだけ)。これより、基質Cys,Se-Cysそれぞれの反応メカニズムが異なるかもと考察されている。

scaffold protein SufA(P77667)にSを供給(Fe-S clusterになる)。このSufSのみでは活性低いが、SufE(P76194)と結合すると活性上昇(基質Cysに対してのみ)。また、 SufBCD complex(P77522,P77499,P77689)によっても活性上昇。
