fkbGHIJKは、extender unit mehoxymalonyl-ACPの合成に関与する。
fkbKは3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenaseにhomologousな酵素をコードし、glyceryl-ACPのC3からH2を取り、-CH2OH → -CHOにする。
実験的に確かめられてはいない。

S.hygroscopicus由来fkbG-Kを導入することにより、S. fradiaeはmalonyl-CoA, methylmalonyl-CoA, ethylmalonyl-CoAに加えてmethoxymalonyl-ACPもPKS前駆体として利用できるようになることを、midecamycin PKS genes(最後から2番目の縮合ステップでmethoxymalonateを要求)の異種性発現産物で確認している。
