desosamine生合成において、DesIIはdTDP-4-amino-4,6-dideoxy-D-glucose → dTDP-3-keto-4,6-dideoxy-D-glucose への変換を担う。
DesIIはradical S-adenosyl-L-methionine(SAM) enzyme superfamilyのメンバーである。

いくつかのhexoseのC-3, C-4での反応を触媒でき、C-4でのamino基はredox neutral deamination reactionを、C-4でのhydroxyl基の存在はC-3でのdehydrogenationを導く。C-4 hydroxyl基がaxialだと基質にならない。

DesII反応産物のHPLC解析、DesII reactionのsteady state kinetic parameters測定あり。
