DpsEは、DpsFによる環化に先立って必要なC-9還元を担う、decaketideに特異的なketoreductaseであることが実験で確認されている。

minimal PKS + KR + CYCをjadomycin, daunorubicin, tetracenomycinのgenesで構成し、そのplasmid発現株での産物を解析。KRとして、dpsE, jadE, actIII を使用している。

DpsEはdecaketidesを還元できるが、octaketidesを還元できない。
JadEはdecaketideだけでなく、octaketideも還元できる。

JadD, DpsFの両cyclasesはC-9で還元されたdecaketidesの位置特異的なfirst-ring cyclase/dehydrasesである。
