KirBは、ポリケチド鎖合成の最終段階としてbeta-alanineとkirromycin precursorの縮合反応を触媒すると示唆した。

kirromycin生合成クラスターには、kirBからポリケチド鎖を切り離すthioesterase domainが存在しない。
著者らは、kirBからの切り離しとピリドン環の環化はC-4の求核攻撃によって行われるかもしれない。それはketo-enol tautomerismにより可能であると推測している。ただし、これらの経路に関与すると考えられるreductases, oxidases or hydrolasesはkirromycin生合成クラスター周辺で見つかっていないため、追加実験が必要だと述べている。
