tmcN自体の機能解析は行われていないが、相同性より、グラム陽性菌の二次代謝遺伝子クラスターに見られるLuxR-family regulatory geneではないかと予想している。また、tmcNには珍しいUUAコドンがあり、このtmcNの発現はUUA-specific tRNAをエンコードしているbldAによって制御されているのではないかと推測している。

S. coelicolorのputative acid-shock-induced geneであり、Na(+)/H(+) antiporter proteinをコードするSCO7832を、TMC産生株Streptomyces sp. CK4412に導入して過剰発現すると、TMC産生が3.5倍以上になる。

これはTMC pathway-specific positive regulatory gene tmcNの過剰発現がSCO7832によってup-regulationされたことによるとされている。RT-PCRでtmcB, tmcC, tmcJ, tmcNの発現確認あり。
