Klebsiella pneumoniaeよりcitD(gammma-), citE(beta-) and citF(alpha-subunit of citrate lyase) の遺伝子をクローニングしてシークエンスしており、これらの遺伝子がcitC(citrate lyase ligase)、citG(機能不明)とともにcitCDEFG gene clusterを形成していることを示している。また、citCDEFGを大腸菌で発現させたところ、acetyl-CoA存在下でのみcitrate lyase活性が検出されたことが示されている。
