putative regulators (vmsS, vmsT)のクローニングをしている。
vmsS はSARP family transcriptional activatorsに相同性を示す。
VmsTはbacterial two-component signal transduction systemのresponse-regulator proteinsに相同性を示す。
VmsSとVmsTは、highly complex regulatory cascadeだと推測している。

virN-virM-vmsS operon

VmsSとVmsTは一次代謝や形態分化には関与していないことが示され、また、VmsS欠損株の解析によりvirginiamycin Mとvirginiamycin Sを生産しないことから、VmsSは両生合成に関与するとしている。
virginiamycin clusterの制御領域にあるVmsR欠損株の転写解析により、vmsSとvmsTの発現はvmsR制御下にあり、これら3つのpathway-specific regulatorsによってvirginiamycin biosynthesisが制御されていると示唆している。

vmsSは、virK,virJ,virI,virH,virG,virF,virE,virD,visB,visC,visDの11gensのmajor transcriptional activatorとして機能すると考察している。
