これはtrans ATとして機能していると予測され、系統分類によりmalonyl-CoA-specific discrete ATsに属するとしている。
starter unitであるisobutyryl-CoAのLMへの取り込みに関しては不明のまま。
isobutyryl-CoAはbkdABから供給されると示唆されている。

module1のDH domainは、inactive。
化合物の構造から、OH基は存在するが二重結合はないのでinactiveと推測している。
beta-keto modifying gene cassette(VirB,VirC,VirD,VirE)の上流に存在するmodule5の連続した2つのACPは、チャンネル中間体の機能をしており、伸長段階と同調してC12でのメチル化過程を促進するための酵素ドッキングステーションの提供を行うと予測している。


VirAは、VirB, VirC, VirD, VirE によるmetyl groupの取り込みの前に、4つのmalonate unitと1つのglycine unitの縮合反応を触媒すると予測している。
また、VirA破壊株はvirginiamycin Sは産生したがvirginiamycin Mは非産生だったことより、VirAはvirginiamycin M産生に特異的なORFだとしている。
