腸内細菌において、methionineのmethyl基は、5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductaseによってN5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolateから合成される5-methyltetrahydrofolateにより提供される。

5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductaseをコードするStreptomyces lividans metFを破壊した株はmethionine要求性になったことから、streptomycetesでも腸内細菌でのようにfolate branchがmethionine生合成に必須であると示された。
