Nanchangmycinのsugar moiety(4-O-methyl-L-rhodinose)の生合成において、NanMはdTDP-L-rhodinoseの4-O-methylationを触媒し、4-O-methyl-L-rhodinoseを生成するようだ。

PlaM1は、putative rhodinosyl-4-O-methyltransferase_NanMと高い相同性あり。
PlaM1 inactive mutantでは、wildの主要代謝産物phenalinolactones A and Dが両方とも産生されず、新しい代謝産物を産生する。それはphenalinolactones chromophoreの典型的なUV/VIS spectrumを示すが、HPLC/electrospray ionization (ESI)-MSによって解析したところ、methyl基がないことがわかった。さらに1H-NMR spectroscopyからその位置を同定した。
以上からPlaM1がL-amicetosyl-4''-O-methyltransferaseであることが実証された。
