PimEはpolyketide productのoxidative modification stepsにたぶん関与するが、正確な機能は測定されていない。

pimEは機能的なcholesterol oxidaseをコードし、pimaricin生合成にも関与する。PimE不活化はpimaricinを非産生にし、それはPimEやその他のcholesterol oxidaseで回復できる。よって、これらのcholesterol oxidasesはpolyene生合成のためのsignaling proteinsとして働きうると示唆される。

ただ、他の解析済のpolyene macrolides生合成に関するgene clusterにcholesterol oxidasesは見つかっていない(と述べられているが、rimocidin/CE-108 clusterにid91% RimDあり) 。
