beta-lactamase inhibitorであるClavulanic acid 生合成に関与するclavaminate synthase 1 isoenzyme (CAS1)のシーケンス決定と特徴づけ。

cvm1はcas1のすぐ上流に存在しており、cvm1にapramycin resistance gene (apr) cassetteを変換して欠損株も作っている。cmvのアミノ酸配列はaldo and keto reductase family 2 enzymesに属するアミノ酸と相同性が見られた。

cvm1 mutant産物はHPLCによって確認され、clavam-2-carboxylate, clavaminic acid, 2-hydroxymethylclavamは検出されず、clavulanic acid産生のみが得られた。
