pyr4自体の機能実験は行われていないが、相同性より2-oxoglutarate ferredoxin oxidoreductase alpha subunitと予測している。同じpyr gene cluster中に存在するpyr18, pyr19によってエンコードされるnitrate reductaseに対して、還元されたferredoxinを供給する役割を持つと推測している。

また、Korは嫌気条件下の生育に必須であることを示している。
