NITE Warns: Sandals Can Pose a Danger on Escalators

The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) today released a NITE Alert on its website to warn consumers about the hazards of sandals getting caught in escalators.

Summary:

On August 28, a child caught her sandals in the space at the edge of an escalator step. The child was seriously injured with a broken third toe and the loss of three toenails. NITE received a further 39 reports of similar cases from the end of August to the beginning of September of this year, of which six cases involved human injury (minor toe injuries). NITE is calling on consumers to exercise extra caution when wearing sandals on escalators.
