Prevention of accidents due to improper use of gas cocks, their connecting tools and relatives

The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) held a press briefing on the prevention of accidents due to aging deterioration of fans and air conditioners.

Among the product accident information reported to the Product Safety Technology Center, accidents with “gas cocks” and “their connection tools” in 5 years from Y2005 to FY2009 were 219 issues. Among them, accident causing death were 3 issues, causing serious injuries were 7 issues, and fires burnt the building were 64 issues. In addition, there were 43 issues (20%) of accidents of which causes couldn’t be identified and 115 issues (52%) by improper treatment or carelessness by the consumers. From the view of details of accidents occurred due to improper use or carelessness by the users, the reasons were “a gas cock not in use was open”, ”bad connection”, “inappropriate connection tool was used” and so on. NITE decided to conduct a promotion of consumers’ awareness since we found the necessity of promoting understanding of the contents of accidents with gas cocks and their connection tools, and these accidents can be avoided by proper use.
