NITE (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation; President: Itaru Yasui) gave a presentation for the media on preventing accidents caused by improper use of cords and power distribution adaptors as shown in the attached materials.

Summary:
Product accidents reported to the Product Safety Technology Center at NITE include 179 cases involving kotatsu heaters*1 in the five years from fiscal 2005 to fiscal 2009*2. Because most of the accidents involving kotatsu heaters occur in January and February due to improper use or carelessness, NITE has decided to call consumers’ attention to this issue to give them an understanding of the accident details and prevent accidents by encouraging them to use products properly.

Kotatsu heaters: electric kotatsu heaters, power cords for electric kotatsu heaters, charcoal briquette kotatsu heaters, artificial coal kotatsu heaters, charcoal kotatsu heaters, etc.
